Hi 👋🏻
As you know, I run 4 newsletters currently, apart from this private newsletter. And as a solo operator, it’s really difficult for me to manage the distribution for all of them.
So, I was looking for someone who could help me. I put out a message in five different groups.
My hiring message was like this:
‘I’m looking for someone who can help with the distribution of my newsletters.
I currently run four newsletters, and my goal is to grow my subscriber base and build a trustworthy, high-quality publication. I believe strong distribution is the key to achieving this.
If you think you can help, please reach out with your pricing and a brief outline of your approach. Messages that only say “hi” or “hello” will not receive a response.’
Yes, my hiring message was a bit unclear. That’s my fault.
But the responses were not what I was looking for. I’ll share them and talk about why we can’t complain about not having the right opportunities in the market.
Responses
First, a guy replied to me privately within 10 seconds of me posting the message.
“Hey, I saw your message…” Nothing else.
Someone else, after some time, asked, “Hey, is this remote?” I replied, “Yes, it is,” and then she didn’t respond at all.
Then again, after some time, another lady reached out saying she could help me with LinkedIn marketing, but she didn’t even ask about my newsletter or share what I had asked for, or if my newsletter would get any help from LinkedIn marketing.
This morning, someone reached out and said, “Hi, is this still open?” I said yes. She took 15 minutes and sent me a long AI copy-paste. I was furious, really. If you can write on your own, then why would you use AI? And secondly, the message was all about “I have eight years of experience… I’ve done that, this,” and it was full of em dashes. Then I said I’m not interested in AI responses, and she still sent me another AI response praising my intellect to show that she could tell the difference between her writing and AI. How ridiculous.

Do you think I’m mocking these people? No, not at all. I’m also a solo operator. I also reach out to people for work, but that doesn’t mean I’ll do the opposite of what’s been asked or do the very thing they were told not to do.
Maybe you’re thinking I’m creating melodrama. That’s not true either.
I am genuinely concerned that people complain about not getting opportunities, and when they do, they waste them like this.
AI outreach
Probably my worst nightmare. After the arrival of AI, everyone has become an expert in every field. Writing, designing, and what not?
I receive at least one AI outreach that doesn’t even make sense every single day. Also, the lady who reached out to me today used AI to reply. If you call yourself a writer and can’t write without AI, then you’re not a writer. I’m not sorry to say that.
I told her that I am not interested in AI responses. Still, she chose to send another AI message.
Me, Me syndrome
The lady I’m talking about, when I told her that I’m not interested in AI responses, her immediate action should have been to write it herself and actually read what I wanted. Instead, she kept saying, “I have eight years of experience, please judge me by my work, not my message.” The person who proposed LinkedIn marketing without even understanding my newsletter said the same. She has three years of experience.
But she had already lost my interest in the very first message.
If you really want to get an opportunity, stop talking about yourself and start talking about them. No one cares what you’ve done if you can’t help the person or company in front of you. Of course, your past experience matters a lot, but it should be aligned with the need.
Thanks for reading 🙂
There are 1000s of opportunities in the market, but they barely get good candidates. Sometimes, because they are toxic, but mostly the fault is of candidates who don’t read the hiring message or give a proper response.
Thanks for reading G! See ya!
