Have you seen them?

Hey hey hey, how is everything? I am just back from an amazing rock climbing and nature study camp. It was incredible. I am back with a fresh mind and the same enthusiastic attitude.

While scrolling through Twitter this morning, I came across a post by Mark from 2023.

He was talking about how quitting alcohol changed his life. I see posts like this almost every day now. At first, they surprised me. Now, it feels so normal.

So let me talk about it today. I have a lot to say.

Why do you even drink Alcohol?

You have quit alcohol for your health. That is good. But why did you start consuming it in the first place? Was it because of your family, your friends, or social media?

Most people I see on social media are heavily influenced by it. As I mentioned in the last edition, many people do it because they want to fit into society.

They believe that if you do not drink alcohol, you can never be cool.

Honestly, I cannot believe how drinking alcohol has been normalised. Even from my childhood, I have seen elders and friends who do not usually drink alcohol still drinking on special occasions. Society has made them believe that alcohol is necessary to enjoy themselves. If you do not drink, you are seen as someone who does not belong in society.

Counter argument

I am someone who truly dislikes extremism, but the world seems to run on it.

When someone says something meaningful from a neutral point of view, I appreciate it. In this context, Sahil said something that resonated with me.

He did not oppose drinking alcohol, nor did he label it as good or bad. Instead, he put the responsibility back on individuals to decide what they want to do for their own sake.

A different person?

More than these social media posts about quitting alcohol, what actually makes me angry is how people use it as a positioning tool, as if they have conquered the world.

You can go on Twitter, LinkedIn, or Instagram and see countless posts where quitting alcohol is used purely to drive engagement.

What is even more absurd is that there are coaches who now claim they will help you quit alcohol.

This entire trend frustrates me.

My point is this. Do not start drinking because you are influenced by others, and do not use quitting as a way to get attention later.

Do things for yourself. And if you get the opportunity, help others build better habits for the right reasons.

Thanks for reading 🙂

I am tired of seeing these ‘quitting alcohol and now life is amazing’ posts. You do not need to glorify alcohol in a way that makes quitting feel like a victory trophy.

It feels embarrassing for humankind.

I wish more people would read my newsletter and start valuing their lives more.

See you!
