Hey, Anirban here.
There is no deep dive today, maybe you will miss it, but I will make sure you don’t miss it.
In today’s newsletter, I will share 3 lessons I learnt after 14 deep dives I’ve written.
Before I go ahead, here's an update: I've started Dark Chocolate podcast. The first one is with Samidha.
Lesson #1 - Email list growth
Email list growth is the first step of email marketing. So here are the ways creators use to grow their email list.
Lead magnet:
Almost everyone builds their email lists with a lead magnet. Such as an ebook, free mini-course, or checklists.
Writing online
Writing online changed my life, similarly, these all creators have started writing online on Twitter, Medium, or LinkedIn. Writing gave them eyeballs and that led the audience to the email list.
Recommendation
Beehiiv, Kit, or Substack has the option to recommend someone else who is also using the same platform to host their newsletter.
Referrals
Beehiiv has the inbuilt feature or if you’re using Kit then you can use Sparkloop, it actually asks you to refer someone else to get some reward, for Sahil Bloom, it’s a book, t-shirt, or if you refer to 247 people you get a 15 min call with him.
Lesson #2 - How to make money
The second lesson is how to make money using email marketing.
Sponsors
As you can see at the top of the newsletter, 1440 is sponsoring my newsletter today.
Similarly, every creator I talked about gets sponsors. Remember, how much Ali Abdaal makes every time he sends an email?
Affiliate
Every creator uses affiliate links while mentioning certain products. This makes them earn a commission from every sale with their email.
Paid subscription
Selling DWY or DFY service
As Luke Matthews, Lara Acosta, or Matt Barker do, they add immense value to their emails and then offer their services to you.
Lesson #3 - Distribution
If you send emails, no one cares. No one knows. You’ve to tell people that you run a newsletter or you send emails.
Write daily
In the case of Justin Welsh, he writes 3 tweets per day, Sahil Bloom started it all by writing on Twitter.
Write a lot → reach more audience → more people will be aware of your email newsletter or emails.
DM
Matt Mcgray suggested dming everyone in your contact even if they aren’t your audience, it will give you an initial boost. Later you can clean your email list according to your goals.
I personally did this too, I shared about it in the 64th edition.
Paid ads
I generally vouch for organic growth but Kit or Beehiiv has an inbuilt ad network, where you can promote your newsletter for (around $1.2 - $2.5 CPC) too. This is a good distribution channel too.
I've started my agency, scalemylist.com, which helps coaches and newsletter creators grow or build their email lists using Facebook ads.
